James Corden to rework ‘Spill Your Guts’ segment after online backlash

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, June 29 ------ 'Our show is a show about joy and light and love, we don’t want to make a show to upset anybody'. The Late Late Show host James Corden went on The Howard Stern Show to address the controversy regarding one of the segments from his show called "Spill Your Guts." In the segment, guests either choose to answer a question or eat “revolting” food items on the table.

“We heard that story, and the next time we do that bit we absolutely won’t involve or use any of those foods... As you said at the start, our show is a show about joy and light and love, we don’t want to make a show to upset anybody,” Corden said. TikTok user Kim Saira took to the platform to share several clips of the segment, particularly one with Jimmy Kimmel. The video features Kimmel and Corden going around the various food choices on the table while saying they look “disgusting” and “terrible.”

Some of the dishes included balut, a century egg, and pig’s blood – all considered delicacies in different parts of Asia. Saira soon started an online petition that called for the game segment to be removed due to the way it portrayed Asian dishes, for Corden to give an apology, and for the show to donate money to Asian American organizations. As of Monday, June 28, over 45,200 people have signed the said petition. Its goal was to get at least 50,000 signatures.

“In the wake of the constant Asian hate crimes that have continuously been occurring, not only is this segment incredibly culturally offensive and insensitive, but it also encourages anti-Asian racism. So many Asian Americans are consistently bullied and mocked for their native foods, and this segment amplifies and encourages it,” as stated in the petition.

In an interview with The Howard Stern Show, Corden said that he would keep the segment but would make certain adjustments including the kinds of dishes that will be used. Corden referenced a previous episode with Anna Wintour. “In the same way that when we played it with Anna Wintour, we gave her a pizza covered in cheeseburgers,” the late night talk show host said during the interview. Corden explained that they will revise the game segment, though he did not give specifics on what dishes will be removed or replaced.
