MANILA, January 5 ------ The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday it is closely monitoring the situation and welfare of an estimated 800 Filipinos in Iran following recent protests in the host country. "There are no Filipinos reported to be affected," the DFA said in a statement. "Members of the Filipino community are advised to avoid unnecessary movements, especially into crowded areas."
Foreign affairs officials have urged Filipinos in Tehran and other affected areas to stay informed through official channels and avoid areas where protests or law enforcement activities are ongoing. The DFA, through the Philippine embassy in Tehran, continues to monitor developments and is in touch with relevant authorities to ensure the protection and welfare of Filipino nationals abroad.
According to news reports, at least six people have been killed amid protests in the country due to the citizens' frustrations over inflation, rising food prices, and the depreciation of the Iranian rial.
