August 14 ------ “It’s never a Jed Madela show kung walang birit,” the balladeer declared when asked if he never gets tired of singing high notes in his concerts and other appearances. Madela has established himself as a singer who can take on a higher range with ease throughout his career. Some of the songs — known for their increasing progression — that he performed were “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “If I Can’t Have You,” and “I Have Nothing,” to name a few.
Madela nevertheless admitted that he sometimes gets tired of singing the high notes, faulting himself for establishing an image of a “biritero.” “Honestly, there are times na nakakapagod [pero] minsan I blame myself, [saying], ‘Kasalanan mo yan eh. Gusto mong bumirit. Gusto mong magpakitang gilas.’ I think I established that image na kapag sinabi mong Jed Madela, biritero. Ako ‘yung few na lalaking bumibirit,” he told reporters during a media huddle for the upcoming “Bravo! Manila” joint concert.
This is why Madela has long acknowledged that high notes will always be his signature — that he, too, would feel “incomplete” if he doesn’t sing in a higher register during shows. “There are times I feel tired, but ‘yun ang signature ko eh. It’s never a Jed Madela show kung walang birit. ‘Yun ang hinahanap ng mga tao — even myself,” he said. “Sometimes, I do shows na medyo relaxed or chill, but after a show, masasabi ang ‘Hindi ka bumirit’ so I think that has been a signature. Kahit isa or dalawa, the birit will always be there,” he continued.
Due to his wide vocal range and emotional interpretation as a singer, Madela has always been on the receiving end of standing ovations. Which is something that he “never got used to.“ You can never get used to it. I still look forward to standing ovations. Ang sarap ng feeling na parang you still yearn for the applause, screams, and standing ovations because it’s affirming na magaling kang performer,” he said.
