August 12 ------ A record so nice, Marina Tushova broke it twice. It only took nine days for Tushova to smash the PVL's all-time single-game scoring record again with 49 points as Capital1 trumped Nxled in a 20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-6 in Pool D of the 2024 Reinforced Conference at the Philsports Arena.
The Russian ace also broke her own single-game attacking record by firing 46 attacks with two aces and one block. Capital1 also logged its longest-ever franchise win streak, now having won three straight matches and is one away from booking a breakthrough spot in the knockout playoffs. “I’m just playing, you know? I just enjoy playing with my team. About this game, thanks to my coach, he saw me, he listened to me, and he gave me a lot (of trust) in this game, in the last game. I did a good job, we did a good job together, and today I felt like I’m on a game,” said Tushova. “I didn’t feel like I’m somewhere else. I’m just attacking and just making points. I was more comfortable and more confident.”
From how the Solar Spikers have taken shape thus far this conference, it was a rare slow start in the opening two sets which they were able to buck upon gaining traction from an 0-2 set hole. Tushova fired hit after hit, with a pair of aces, a kill block in the final frame and 14 excellent receptions, to complete an improbable comeback and their first reverse-sweep win in only their second-ever PVL conference.
Iris Tolenada followed suit among Capital1’s leading scorers with seven poitns and 17 excellent sets alongside another 17-piece from Julia Ipac. On the flip side, a second victory wasn’t to be for Nxled as Jho Maraguinot’s 19-point night, Chiara Permentilla’s 15-piece and American import Meegan Hart’s 13 all fell flat in the endgame.
