Gilas Women 3x3 sweeps group stage after beating Malaysia

September 24 ------ GILAS Pilipinas Women’s 3x3 team turned back Southeast Asia rival Malaysia, 17-12, to punch a quarterfinals ticket in the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

Kacey dela Rosa asserted her might inside with eight points and seven rebounds as the Filipinas cagebelles topped Pool C with a 3-0 slate for an outright berth in the knockout stage set Thursday at the Kinjo-futo Station Square. Both the PH men and women’s 3x3 teams made it to the quarterfinals by completing a sweep of their respective pool plays.

The women's side will clash with the winner of the play-in between the no. 2 team in Pool A and no. 3 in Pool D. Maria Pasilang finished with six points and seven rebounds for Gilas, with Amyah Espanol and Kennan Ka combining for three points and nine rebounds in the win over Malaysia.

A basket by Dela Rosa and free throw by Espanol allowed the Philippines to break free from a 6-6 contest and took control of the match the rest of the way. Malaysia finished with a 2-1 record to take the no. 2 seed in Pool C, while Mongolia beat Macao China, 15-9, to claim the no. 3 seed, relegating both countries in a play-in, also scheduled on Thursday.
