July 31 ------ Strong Group Athletics has boosted its bid for a third straight title in the 45th William Jones Cup by adding veteran guard Matthew Wright and forwards William Navarro and Shaun Ildefonso to its roster.
The tournament is set from Aug. 8 to 23 at the New Taipei City Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taiwan. Team president Jacob Lao said Wright and Navarro's international experience will strengthen the squad, while thanking Abra and Congressman JB Bernos for allowing Shaun Ildefonso, Dave Ildefonso, and DJ Fenner to reinforce the team despite their MPBL commitments.
Coach Charles Tiu welcomed the return of Wright, whom he has not coached in nearly a decade, praising the veteran's leadership and shooting. He also expressed excitement over finally bringing Navarro into the fold, citing the versatile forward's size and ability to defend multiple positions. Shaun Ildefonso, who is averaging 9.0 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Abra Weavers in the MPBL, is expected to provide energy and defense while teaming up with his younger brother Dave.
The three newcomers join a Strong Group lineup led by Boban Marjanovic,Angelo Kouame, Tajuan Agee, Allen Liwag and Titing Manalili.
Strong Group will face Chinese Taipei Blue, Korea, and Japan in the group stage as it aims to become the first team since Iran (2009-2011) to win three consecutive William Jones Cup championships.
