PMNT U23 beats Kuwait for first Asiad football win in 68 years

September 23 ------ THE Philippines found the silver lining to its first participation in the Asian Games men’s football tournament in 52 years by beating Kuwait, 2-1 at the Nagoya City Minato Soccer Field.

Andres Aldeguer, son of former La Salle basketball star Dino, scored on a penalty kick on injury time to break the tie and give the Philippines its first Asian Games win in men’s football since 1964. While the previous participation of the Philippines in men’s football was in Tehran in 1974, records available online showed that the last victory of the Philippines in Asian Games men’s football came in 1958 against Japan, 1-0, in Tokyo.

The lone goal scorer of the match was George Aldeguer. The Philippines salvaged the full three points after suffering defeats to Uzbekistan, 5-1, and Vietnam, 2-0. It finished third in Group C - not enough to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
