PH upsets Uzbekistan for first win in Billie Jean King Cup 2025

MANILA, June 18 ------ Team Philippines scored a thrilling upset against a higher-ranked Uzbekistan squad in the group stage of the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup-Asia/Oceania Group II, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In the first singles, Tennielle Madis of the Philippines lost to Daria Shubina, 6-4, 3-6, 1-6. The second match saw Shaira Rivera pull off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win against Nigina Adburaimova, who is ranked No. 898 by the WTA. In the deciding doubles, the Philippine duo of Shaira and Alexa Milliam came away with a three-set win after a super tiebreak, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
The Philippines now has a 1-1 record in Group B of the competition. "Our victory today is a reminder that passion and perseverance can overcome any ranking or obstacle. We are inspired to keep pushing forward and representing the Philippines with pride and determination," head coach Denise Dy said.
The Philippines lost to Indonesia in their opening tie on Monday.
