PH’s Alex Eala overcomes Spaniard to reach girls quarterfinals

October 8 ------ Alex Eala of the Philippines fought back from a second-set defeat to overcome Spain's Leyre Romero Gormaz and earn a spot in the girls quarterfinals of the 2020 French Open on Wednesday in Paris. Eala, who beat Germany's Mara Guth in the second round, downed Gormaz 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

The 15-year-old, who trains at the Rafa Nadal Academy, finished the match in 1 hour, 48 minutes. She will next face Linda Noskova of Czech Republic. Meanwhile, in men's play, Stefanos Tsitsipas reached his second Grand Slam semifinal on Wednesday with a straight-sets win over Andrey Rublev at Roland Garros, setting up a potential clash with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic for a place in the championship match.

The Greek fifth seed avenged last month's loss to Rublev in the Hamburg final by defeating the Russian 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 to match his breakout run at the 2019 Australian Open. He will play Djokovic or Spanish 17th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the last four on Friday.
