Petro Gazz ends Zus Coffee's dream run, claims fourth PVL title

December 1 ------ The Angels captured their fourth PVL championship by spoiling ZUS Coffee’s dream run, 21-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-19, in the 2025 PVL Reinforced Conference crown at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Angels now stand alone as the most successful team in Reinforced Conference history with three titles spaced three years apart since 2019. The campaign also carved out a slate of Petro Gazz milestones led by its first two-title calendar year, Lindsey Vander Weide becoming the PVL’s first two-time Reinforced Conference champion import and the Van Sickles’ unique place in league history as the first parent-daughter champion trio.

With Gary Van Sickle claiming a title in his debut conference, the Angels now boast four different coaches for each of their four PVL titles, two of whom now of foreign descent, joining Koji Tsuzurabara (2025), Rald Ricafort (2022) and Arnold Laniog (2019). "There were a couple of times there where I think we had a little doubt, but the girls just kept focused, stayed together, kept their unity and we just chipped away at it," the Van Sickle patriarch said.

The championship match pivoted sharply in the second set, one that wrested momentum away from ZUS Coffee just when it appeared to be settling in after a strong opening frame. The Thunderbelles held four set points in the extended second set, but American import Anna DeBeer faltered with three costly attack errors.

Petro Gazz then slammed the door shut at 28–26 as Ranya Musa stuffed Thea Gagate at the net, flipping the match on its head. From that momentum swing, the Angels never looked back as they maintained steady five-point cushions for most of the final two frames, eventually cruising to the finish line to clinch their second championship of the year.

In a match packed with standout scoring efforts, it was middle blocker MJ Phillips who stole the spotlight as her 17-point explosion earned her a second Finals MVP plum, just seven months after collecting the same honor in the All-Filipino Conference. Lindsey Vander Weide led all scorers with 23 points and nine receptions, while newly crowned three-time conference MVP Brooke Van Sickle backed her up with 20 points and seven receptions in another signature two-way performance. “Everyone kind of realized that the first set wasn’t our best performance and we had to do better,” Van Sickle said. “ZUS was up, they’re doing fantastic, they’re a really tough team. We knew that in order to take the championship, we had to lock in and flip it. Everyone stepped up in clutch moments and I’m really, really happy with how it went.”

Myla Pablo, a holdover from Petro Gazz’s 2022 Reinforced Conference title run, sealed the crown with the championship-clinching hit in the fourth set, completing a 14-point, 11-dig double-double. Rookie setter Jules Tolentino held her nerve with 20 excellent sets, while fellow 2022 champion Bang Pineda anchored the floor defense with 13 digs.

One of Petro Gazz’s biggest championship keys was its ability to neutralize Anna DeBeer, limiting the high-flying American to one of her lowest-scoring outings of the conference. DeBeer, who ended the season as the best foreign guest player, was held to just 18 points that's well below her usual explosive output. Rookie revelation AC Miner, the conference’s top-performing first-year player, posted 16 points built on 10 attacks and a game-high six blocks. Middle anchor Thea Gagate added 11 points in another steady outing, while best setter Cloanne Mondoñedo kept the offense afloat with 21 excellent sets. Alyssa Eroa capped her standout season with an 18-dig, 16-reception double-double, helping steady the floor for a ZUS Coffee side that wraps up its breakthrough, year-old franchise campaign with a silver-medal finish, the best in its PVL tenure so far.
