PBA: Phoenix beats NorthPort in battle of also-ran teams

MANILA, June 5 ------ Phoenix defeated NorthPort, 118-107, in an encounter of also-ran teams in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig. Jason Perkins of the Fuel Masters nabbed 26 points including four triples, to go with eight rebounds and four assists, leading his team on the offensive side of things.

Kai Ballungay delivered close to a double-double of 17 points and nine rebounds, while Ken Tuffin added 14 markers and five assists. It was a battle of pride, at least for the Fuel Masters, nailing their third win to be in the ninth place. For their part, the Batang Pier have remained winless in their last eight games.

Calvin Abueva, who was traded to NorthPort by Magnolia, made his debut for his new team this game. The former Magnolia forward posted 18 points, seven boards, and three dimes. Abueva recently joined NorthPort alongside Jerrick Balanza in exchange for then-NorthPort ace William Navarro.
