MANILA, June 19 ------ The Rain or Shine ElastoPainters will live to fight another day in the PBA Playoffs. The Yeng Guiao-coached squad forced a do-or-die clash vs. the second-seeded NLEX Road Warriors after their Season 49 Philippine Cup Quarterfinals Game 1 win at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Jhonard Clarito tallied 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to lead his team, while Adrian Nocum followed with 20 markers, five boards, two steals, and two dimes. “We were just patient,” said Guiao after the game. “We had our run in the first half, they had their run in the third, but it’s sheer handwork. Si Jhonard, buhis buhay talaga. Any coach will appreciate that effort.” “For me, dinaan lang namin sa sipag, sa box out, at sa rebound,” added Clarito. “Sabi ni Coach Yeng, walang matatalo sa depensa, so kailangan, buwis-buhay talaga.”
RoS and NLEX will face again on Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila, with the winner advancing into the semifinals. The E-Painters saw their 16-point lead dissolved all thanks to the third-quarter outburst of Xyrus Torress — with the Far Eastern University product scoring 14 of his total scoring production in that span — but Clarito rallied his squad in the fourth to regain the lead and eventually seal the win.
