PBA brings back group format for Governors’ Cup

MANILA, Philippines, June 28 ------ The PBA will stage its season-ending Governors’ Cup under a group format, replicating the setup used during the previous season.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed the implementation of the format that was first introduced during the 2024 edition of the same conference. All 12 teams, plus guest squad Macau, will be split into two groups for the conference that tips off July 10.

Macau is returning for another guest participation despite a dismal campaign in the Commissioner’s Cup. TNT won the championship of the Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup when the group stage format was first introduced. During that conference, teams were divided into two groups based on their overall records from the previous season, and met the teams in their group twice.

The top four teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals. The format is in complete contrast to the ones used in this season’s Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup, which used a single-round elimination schedule.
