Metro Manila, June 13 ------ Malacañang conferred the highest recognition to eight individuals for their distinct contribution to the development and promotion of Philippine arts and culture.
Multi-awarded actress Nora Cabaltera Villamayor (aka Nora Aunor) was bestowed the National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, sharing the honor with highly-acclaimed screenwriter Ricky Lee and the late legendary director Marilou Diaz-Abaya. Famed choreographer Agnes D. Locsin, who was known for neo-ethnic dance, was hailed as National Artist for Dance. Salvacion-Lim Higgins, who became famous for her terno creations, was named National Artist for Fashion Design. Also honored were poet and literary critic Gemino H. Abad as National Artist for Literature and soprano Fides Cuyugan-Asensio as National Artist for Music. The late veteran actor and director Antonio "Tony" Mabesa, on the other hand, is this year’s National Artist for Theater.
The Order of National Artist, established under Proclamation No. 1001 and signed in 1972, is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines and conferred by the country’s president upon the recommendation of both institutions. According to the NCCA, living awardees will receive a minimum cash award of P200,000 and a minimum lifetime personal monthly stipend of P50,000. The award recipients will also receive medical and hospitalization benefits of at least P750,000. They are also entitled to life insurance policy by the Government Service Insurance System and/or private insurance companies. National Artists will also be granted a state funeral on their death. Meanwhile, awardees who have already died will be granted a one-time P150,000 cash award.
