August 18 ------ At around 9:00 PM, Nenad Vucinic made his way out of the SMART Araneta Coliseum. It was the last time he will do so as part of a Philippine club or a national team for the foreseeable future.
Vucinic, 57, resigned from his post as both an assistant coach for Gilas Pilipinas and as a consultant to Meralco early this month. The Serbian-Kiwi tactician, though, made sure to finish his duties for Meralco in the Philippine Cup first before leaving. His stint with Meralco ended on Wednesday evening after the Bolts suffered a 100-89 Game Seven rout by the San Miguel Beermen. He bid farewell to Norman Black and Meralco’s staff after the game.
Vucinic was initially tapped by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to be a consultant to the national team back in February. He served as one of Chot Reyes’ assistant coaches during the second window of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup. The former head coach of the Tall Blacks also was Gilas’ head coach during the 2022 KB Kookmin Bank Invitational and the third window last month.
According to multiple sources closely monitoring the situation, Vucinic will head back home to start anew.
