MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA) celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2026 on February 3, 2026 marking a significant milestone in the Philippines’ journey as a leading pipeline of global maritime talent.

The graduating batch, consisting of 84 Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) and 100 Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSME) cadets, will continue their shipboard career as Third Officers and Third Engineers onboard Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ (MOL) “Blue Ships” or vessels focused on advanced ocean technology and safety; and Magsaysay-operated “Green Ships” or vessels using eco-friendly and cleaner technology for sustainability.

The ceremony started with Welcome Remarks from MMMA President, Dr. Michael Morales who welcomed the Guest of Honor and keynote speaker, the Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines, dignitaries, special guests, colleagues from Magsaysay, representatives from Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., scholarship sponsors, partner institutions, stewards, faculty and staff of MMMA, parents and families, and the graduating cadets to the commencement exercise. “Welcome. It gives me great pride and joy to welcome you all to the academy's third graduation ceremony,” greets Dr. Morales.

Dr. Morales asserted that MMMA have prepared the graduates well. “The sea awaits when new challenges will put your knowledge and character to the test… new technologies, AI, wind power, autonomous vessels, changing regulations, and a more volatile world will be just a few; but this is exactly what we train you for. To serve with excellence and discipline, not just for your job, but for life.” He concluded by telling them, “Make your families, your alma mater, and your country proud.”

Magsaysay Group President and CEO, Ms. Doris Magsaysay Ho congratulated the graduates of their achievements and reminded them of the importance of the career they have chosen. “When you pursue your destination, your purpose and the pursuit of meaning, always remember that you will be performing such an important, essential service for all of humanity, without shipping the whole world will stop. So, stay purposeful, and always be energized by the deeper meaning of your career and your profession. This will help you overcome the challenges that hold you back from making your dreams come true,” emphasized Ms. Ho.

MOL Chairman and Executive Officer, Mr. Junichiro Ikeda highlighted MOL’s dedication to strengthening businesses, enhancing economy, and defining a sustainable and productive direction. He also shared his message to the graduates, “Carry forward the lesson you learned at the MMMA. Wherever your career takes you, lead with purpose, act with integrity, and always strive for excellence. Remember that your actions define the reputation of your company, the pride of the academy, and the safety of everyone onboard. Congratulations once again. May your voyage ahead be safe, meaningful, and full of progress.”

In his Special Message to the graduates Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines, His Excellency Kazuya Endo highlighted the vital role of Filipino seafarers in the global maritime economy, noting that they account for about 70% of Japan’s merchant fleet. “The maritime industry plays a crucial role in the global economy. The Philippines and Japan are not separated, but rather connected by the sea. I have high hopes for MMMA graduates," Ambassador Endo said. "Through your dedication, commitment, and professionalism, I am confident that you will help ensure the stability and safety of international shipping and make significant contributions to the maritime industry’s continued growth,” he added.

MMMA Dean of Maritime Education, C/Engr. Michael G. Delos Reyes then led Presentation of Candidates for Graduation. Dr. Morales, The Guest of Honor, MMMA Chair of BSME Program, C/Engr. Peter Joseph Mapua and MMMA Chair of BSMT Program, Capt. Kenneth Owen Ocampo presented the diplomas as the graduates were called.

Next in the program, Cadet John Dave Ricafrante Niedo delivered the Valedictory Address which centered on thanking the institution that molded them to become the best mariners they may be, “In behalf of the graduating class, I extend our deepest gratitude to MOL and Magsaysay for building and nurturing this remarkable institution. The MMMA has not only shaped our skill but has strengthen our character. This academy prepared us for the real battles that await us onboard.” He ended his address by asserting their resolve to face the challenges ahead, “The sea awaits, the future calls and we are ready.”

MMMA Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Philippine-Japan Manning Consultative Council, Inc. (PJMCC) President, Mr. Marlon R. Rono then introduced the Guest of Honor, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretary, Honorable Bernard P. Olalia.

Undersecretary Olalia congratulated the graduates, noting that they will carry not only the honor of representing their company and family, but the Philippine flag as well, as they are deployed overseas. He acknowledged the critical role of Filipino seafarers in global commerce backed by strong international reputation. “Seafarers are indispensable to global commerce and international mobility, often working under challenging conditions far from home,” Olalia said. “Filipino seafarers continue to earn global recognition for their competence, reliability, and professionalism. Schools like MMMA play a crucial role in shaping this reputation,” he added.

Undersecretary Olalia reminded the graduates that their conduct at sea reflects on the nation. “The Filipino seafarer has long been a symbol of excellence on the global stage, but excellence is built early within institutions that demand discipline, uphold integrity, and instill a spirit of service,” he said. “Every time you raise the flag on a foreign ship, you represent our nation. Your conduct, work ethic, and professionalism shape how the world sees the Filipino worker—this is a great responsibility, but also a great honor,” Olalia added.

Lastly, the Undersecretary reiterated the DMW’s mandate to protect overseas Filipino workers and assured graduates that the government continues to address issues in maritime labor governance. “We recognize that you are not just workers at sea—you are vital contributors to the global economy and ambassadors of Filipino excellence,” he said. “Wherever your journey takes you, whether onboard or when you return home, your government stands with you.”

Guided by this year’s theme, “Beyond the Beacon: Guiding Voyages, Forging Futures,” the Class of 2026 enters the fleet as the next generation of sustainable seafarers – ready to operate advanced ships and contribute to a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable maritime industry.
