August 14 ------ The acclaimed Filipino movie "Sunshine," starring actress Maris Racal, continues to receive international recognition as it won the Tartuff Audience Award at the Tartuff (PÖFF Love Film Festival).
This was confirmed by the festival through a press release published on its website. Production company Project 8 Projects also shared the good news via a social media post on early Wednesday, August 13. "The audience of Tartuffe can appreciate the cinematography of exotic lands," part of the release read as translated in English.
Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, "Sunshine" tells the story of a teenage gymnast who discovers that she is pregnant before the Olympic trial competition, in a patriarchal country where abortions are prohibited.
Just last month, the coming-of-age movie won two awards at the Austin Asian American Film Festival (AAAFF), which champions Asian and Asian-American stories through film and creative media. The film won both the Narrative Feature Jury Award and the Narrative Feature Audience Award. Last February, the movie also won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. "Sunshine" was also part of the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival under the World Cinema Now section. Last October, the film also received a nomination for Best Youth Film at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.
