July 24 ------ MAGNOLIA moved on the cusp of completing a sweep of the PBA On Tour after a 111-91 victory over skidding Phoenixon Sunday night at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. The Hotshots dropped a telling 19-4 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away for good, 104-84, which Jerrick Ahanmisi highlighted with back-to-back three pointers. Jio Jalalon continued his splendid showing in the preseason with 22 points and nine assists for the Hotshots, who now carried a perfect 10-0 slate.
Coach Chito Victolero doesn't want to directly say about sweeping the tournament, but stressed the goal of the Hotshots is to win every game. "We're serious about it. We're very serious on this preseason," he said, "Every day kaming nag-e-ensayo and kung wala kaming goal, wala kaming gagawin sa game. This is the test of our practices." He added.
With Paul Lee still in the US, Mark Barroca also stepped up offensively for the Hotshots with 19 points, Aris Dionisio added 15 in his return to active duty, while Ahanmisi had 11. Phoenix lost for the fifth straight game for a 3-8 record, but not before giving Magnolia a huge scare. The Fuel Masters were actually just within striking distance, 82-80, with eight minutes to play when the Hotshots went on that game telling run, which Ahanmisi sparked with two straight corner trey. Phoenix played undermanned anew and was led by the 24 points of Jayjay Alejandro, who was 6-of-11 from three-point range. Reden Celda also had a good game for the Fuel Masters with 21 points and seven rebounds.
