Kieffer Alas bound for Utah after Perth to pursue US dreams

May 10 ------ HIGH school star Kieffer Alas has committed to play for the Layton Christian Academy in Utah. His father and champion coach Louie Alas confirmed the decision of the La Salle Zobel stalwart to SPIN.ph just before Kieffer flies to Perth, Australia for a month-long camp with the Warwick Senators of coach Andrew Cooper. “Nag-commit na siya sa Layton Christian Academy. Matagal na siyang may communication with the coach of the school. And sabi niya nga sa amin gusto niya yung (basketball) program nila," said the elder Alas. 

  

Casey Stanley is the head coach of Layton and has an extensive experience working the sidelines of some of the best basketball programs in the US including Arkansas and Iona University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science. The Layton basketball program has produced seven Utah High School State Championships including the 2023-24 State Champins for 4A basketball. 

  

Coach Louie and wife Liza will accompany their youngest son to Australia where they will stay for a month before returning to the country, and then leave again by July for Utah. “Depende rin yung stay namin sa Australia sa training ni Kiefer, puwedeng ma-extend pa,” added the former national coach. 

  

The Alas family is also grateful for all the help being extended to their son especially in his foray to play internationally. On Thursday, Kieffer, coach Louie and his wife made a courtesy call to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas as they expressed their gratitude to the support given by the country's basketball federation. 

  

On hand to welcome them are SBP Executive Director Erika Dy and coach Bacon Austria. Coach Louie also mentioned Filipinos based in Perth offering to host the family during Kieffer's training camp with the Senators. "Ang daming nag-offer ng tulong sa pag-stay namin sa Australia. And malaking bagay yun, kaya ang laking pasalamat sa kanilang lahat," added the elder Alas.
