Pinay batters beat Great Britain to move closer to WC finals

August 27 ------ THE Philippines made it two in a row in the 10th Women’s Baseball World Cup after beating Great Britain, 6-2 in Tainan, Taiwan.

The Pinay batters followed up their 3-0 victory over world No. 7 Cuba earlier in the day to improve their win-loss record to 2-1 for third place in the tournament. Japan is currently in first place with 3-0, with second placer Chinese Taipei (1-0) at second but was playing Venezuela as of posting time.

The top three teams in the competition in Tainan together with the United States, Australia, and Canada will play in the finals to be held next year in Rockford, Illinois, United States. The top three squads will be known on Thursday during the final day of competitions with the Philippines facing Chinese Taipei and Venezuela.

The Philippines is in its debut World Cup after earning a berth via a wild card. The Pinay batters jumped out of a 4-0 lead at the top of the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Martine Dominique Francisco. Francisco later crossed home plate on a two-out RBI double by Ivymhel Capistrano, who also scored on an RBI double by Shyla Mae Celis.

Mary Nichole Padasas struck out four British batters in a two-run, five-hit starting role for four innings, with Jojielyn Lim completing the victory in a one-inning relief appearance for the Isaac Bacarisas-coached squad.
