BACOLOD, Philippines, June 4 ------ Three villages in Bago, Negros Occidental experienced ashfall after Kanlaon Volcano emitted ash and plumes that rose 1,200 meters according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Phivolcs said 38 volcanic quakes were recorded around the volcano on the same day. Kanlaon remained under Alert Level 3 or high-level unrest, state volcanologists said.
Donato Sermeno III, chief of the Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR), said ash blanketed the villages of Mailum, Ilijan and Binubuhan following the emission that lasted 29 minutes. On Saturday, the OCD reopened the volcano’s danger zone to farmers and residents who needed to tend to their farms and livestock and carry out other essential tasks from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sermeno said the OCD-NIR would coordinate with Phivolcs matters pertaining to the possible restoration of the ban on the entry into Kanlaon’s six-kilometer extended danger zone.
