Jerwin Ancajas stops Mexican foe in first outing as featherweight

April 21 ------ JERWIN Ancajas had a rousing debut as a featherweight, scoring a fourth-round stoppage of Mexican Ruben Tostado Garcia at the Hipodromo Caliente in Mexico.

The former world super-flyweight champion knocked down the hometown bet twice in the course of the scheduled eight-round fight, prompting Garcia to quit on his stool. Ancajas, 34, improved his record to 37-4-2 with 24 KOs as he fought for the first time following an eight-month layoff. His last bout was a majority decision win against Ruben Casero of Uruguay last August in Long Beach, California in what proved to be his final outing as a super-bantamweight.

It was the first fight of Ancajas in Mexico in seven years or since scoring a sixth-round TKO against Miguel Gonzalez at the Auditorio GNP Seguros, Puebla in 2019 to retain his IBF super-flyweight crown. The Filipino is also on a four-fight winning streak after a failed bid to win the WBA bantamweight crown following a ninth-round knockout against Takuma Inoue in Tokyo two years ago. Garcia (28-16-1 with 11 KOs) lost for the fifth time in his last six outings,

The 32-year-old Mexican is coming off a third-round TKO against former WBC bantamweight champion and compatriot Alexandro Santiago.
