Jerrold Mangliwan reaches finals of men's 400m - T52 of Paralympics

August 28 ------ JERROLD Mangliwan advanced to the final of the men’s 400m – T52 after submitting the seventh-best time in the heats of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games at the Olympic Stadium on Friday. The 41-year-old Mangliwan placed fourth in Heat 1 with a time of one minute, 3.41 seconds, but still enough to earn a spot in the medal round after submitting the next two fastest times after the top three finishers in each of the two heats.

The wheelchair racer repeated his performance in the 2016 Paralympic Games where he made it to the finals of the same event and finished seventh. It was the first time in this edition of the Paralympic that a Filipino will vie for a medal following Day 3 of the competitions. The final is set also on Friday, 8:16 p.m. (7:16 p.m. Philippine time). The Philippine flag bearer in Tokyo 2020 opening rites will be up against Tomoki Sato of Japan, who topped the heats with a time of 57.33 seconds, well off the T52 world record of 55.13 he registered in 2018.

Also competing for medals are reigning Olympic champion and Heat 1 winner Raymond Martin of the United States, Ginafranco Iannotta of the United States, Hirokazu Ueyonabaru of Japan, Isaiah Rigo of the United States, Leonardo De Jesus Perez Juarez of Mexico, and Thomas Geierspichler of Austria.
