This initiative aims to provide hearing healthcare services in Iloilo City, benefiting some 100 individuals with hearing impairments through specialized medical missions, hearing aid distribution, and the training of healthcare workers. By working together, PJMCC and PFPFI reaffirm their commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and supporting communities in need. The key highlights of the agreement include Medical Mission, Public Awareness and Education, and Health Worker Training.

Captain Emmanuel L. Regio, Chairman and President of PJMCC, stated, “This new project aims to improve the quality of life and independence for seafarers, many of whom suffer from hearing loss due to noise exposure, particularly in the engine department. We will focus on educating our seafarers and ensuring they have access to essential resources. Those in need will receive priority care, helping them return to work and support their families. This collaboration marks a significant step toward a future where everyone can access the healthcare they deserve.”

Meanwhile, PFPP President, Dr. Josephine R. Bundoc, reminded that this MOA is the second PJMCC Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project with Physicians for Peace. The initial partnership was the establishment of the Prosthetic Orthotic hub through the assistance of PJMCC in 2022. “We are truly very happy and glad that PJMCC is moving towards working on the other disabilities which should truly affect the quality of life of our Filipino persons with disabilities,” shared Dr. Bundoc.

Dr Bundoc expressed her gratitude to PJMCC, "So in behalf of Physicians for Peace, we are truly expressing our heartfelt thanks for your commitment and most of all for entrusting Physicians for Peace, this responsibility to be able to bring out to the various islands, what PJMCC stands for in terms of community service."

At the same time Project Director for this hearing project, Dr. Norberto Martinez highlighted the importance of hearing protection and education, particularly among seafarers. He emphasized that 60% of hearing loss is preventable. Many individuals do not use hearing protection due to skepticism about its effectiveness, despite the risk of irreversible damage and potential unemployment. Dr. Martinez also thanked the organization for supporting the project, emphasizing that addressing hearing impairment requires a collaborative community effort because hearing loss affects not only the individual but also their communication with others. His speech concluded with a quote from Helen Keller, the famous deaf-blind woman, who said that blindness separates us from things, deafness separates us from people.

The signing of the memorandum of agreement signifies an important advancement in meeting hearing healthcare needs and fostering an inclusive community. PJMCC is dedicated to backing meaningful healthcare initiatives that enhance the health and well-being of seafarers, their families, and the broader public.
