Firefly' all set to light up the MMFF silver screen

December 19 ------ GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs have collaborated once more to bring audiences a magical cinematic experience with "Firefly," a captivating coming-of-age drama/adventure road trip directed by Zig Madamba Dulay.

Known for his work in "Maria Clara at Ibarra," "Paglipay," and "Black Rainbow," Dulay brings his creative touch to a film that promises to enchant audiences with its magical tale of promises, wishes, and the power of imagination. The movie boasts a stellar cast led by the celebrated Alessandra de Rossi, a veteran actress known for her roles in critically acclaimed films such as "Hubog," "Azucena," and "Mga Munting Tinig." Euwenn Mikaell, a promising child actor recognized for his performances in Kapuso TV series such as "Cain at Abel," "One of the Baes," and "The Write One," joins the ensemble. Ysabel Ortega and Miguel Tanfelix, known for their roles in GMA's adaptation of "Voltes V Legacy," complete the talented lineup with a special guest appearance by Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes.

Firefly" sets the stage for a heartwarming and fantastical journey: To fulfill a promise to his mother, a young boy searches for the mythical island described in her bedtime stories — a place where one can make any wish upon seeing the light of a thousand fireflies. The story unfolds in 1999 through the eyes of the adult Tonton, played by Mikaell, who reminisces about life with his mother, Elay, portrayed by de Rossi. Elay weaves enchanting tales of a mythical island where a brave firefly triumphs over adversity to protect his butterfly friend. Elay, in a bid to encourage Tonton, assures him that the island is real and that wishes come true upon reaching it. Driven by the promise to his mother, Tonton embarks on a whimsical adventure armed with a map drawn by Elay in an old notebook. The film ultimately takes viewers on a nostalgic journey filled with encounters with three mysterious strangers who may either aid or obstruct Tonton's quest.

Dulay promises that "Firefly" is not just a visual feast but also a testament to the rich storytelling tradition of GMA Public Affairs. The film explores the power of belief, the magic of childhood fantasies, and the enduring bond between a mother and her son. "Firefly" is GMA Network's official entry to the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival, promising a theatrical release that will appeal to a wide range of viewers with its heartfelt storytelling. The movie opens on December 25.
