February 9 ------ The project is currently being produced by ABS-CBN for its streaming platform iWant in Los Angeles, with first-look images already released ahead of its planned production wrap later this month.
Directed and written by Mark Labella, the series represents iWant’s first bilingual English-Filipino production shot in America. Joining Labella as directors are Wesley Villarica and Drea Castro. “Nurse the Dead” stars Filipino-American actress and entrepreneur Jelynn Malone as Noa Reyes, a Filipina nurse supervisor gifted with a “third eye” that allows her to see the supernatural. Her unusual ability places her in the middle of a hospital teeming with ghosts, while she struggles to support burnt-out co-workers and navigate her own family challenges.
Jennings portrays the character Grim, Rodriguez takes on the role of Ros, Punzalan plays Camille, and Guevarra appears as Zeny. Also part of the ensemble are Gigette Reyes as Mami Tess and American actress Johari Johnson as Jane, alongside Sydney Bollenbeck, Kyle Rezzarday, and Natalie Orsi.
In a statement, Labella shared the inspiration behind the series, noting that Filipino nurses account for about four percent of the US nursing workforce but were disproportionately represented among Covid-era nurse deaths. “We’re using the supernatural and workplace chaos to explore grief, resilience, and legacy with bite, humor, and heart,” he said.
Joining the project as both cast member and production contributor is Tamerlane Mopia, known to Filipino audiences as “Alaska Boy” from Ogie Diaz’s “Showbiz Update.”
