December 23 ------ THE Filipinas continue to rise in the latest FIFA Women’s Rankings. The Philippines jumped six places to move from 44th to 38th at the close of a historic 2023 for the women’s football team.
The increase could be attributed to the Philippines winning two out of three matches in the second round of the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Asian Football Confederation last October. PWNT, however, has been ousted from contention for a berth in Paris 2024 after losing to Australia. The Filipinas stayed at seventh in the AFC, and third in the Asean Football Federation or in Southeast Asia.
The year has been a memorable one for the Filipinas highlighted by their participation in the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup. They have also sustained their form after a coaching change when Mark Torcaso took over replacing Alen Stajcic at the end of the World Cup. Torcaso has recently took the Filipinas coaching job on a fulltime basis after resigning with his club team Western United in Australia.
