February 28 ------ MIKE Phillips has finally been recognized by FIBA as a local and is now eligible to play for Gilas Pilipinas in all tournaments sanctioned by basketball’s world governing body. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas made the announcement as it expressed its gratitude to FIBA for ‘its swift action in hearing [their] request and classifying Mike Philips as a player without restrictions.’

The 6-foot-6 Philips, adjudged the Finals MVP when La Salle regained the UAAP men’s basketball crown last season, was previously classified as a naturalized player, the main reason why he was red-flagged by Thai organizers to play for the Philippines in last year’s 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok. But the Fil-Am forward previously suited up for Gilas when it regained the basketball gold in the 2023 edition of the SEA Games in Cambodia.

Philips became the second Fil-Am player to be reclassified as a local by FIBA in less than a year after Quentin Millora-Brown. Chris Newsome, an integral part of Tim Cone's Gilas Pilipinas squad - was also reclassified by FIBA as a local a few years ago alongside veteran big Greg Slaughter. Obviously thrilled by the latest development, Philips said he's ready to suit up and play for the national team. "Handa na po akong lumaban para sa ating bansa! Ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya ko at ng buong puso ko!" he said in a statement. "I cannot wait to compete alongside my fellow Filipinos as we continue pushing Philippine basketball forward."

Philips added he's likewise grateful for both FIBA and SBP for giving him the opportunity to play for the country. "It's a blessing and a huge honor to actually be eligible to represent the Philippines. The opportunity to play for the national team is a longtime dream and an answered prayer," he said. "I'm beyond grateful to FIBA, the SBP, and everyone who supported this process." he added.
