June 11 ------ Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena opened a busy week in the European circuit by placing fifth in the FBK Games in the Netherlands. Obiena cleared 5.66-meters, the same height registered by American Keaton Daniel and China's Tao Zhong. Obiena, however, placed fifth via countback as it had taken him two attempts to clear 5.56-meters.
The Filipino star faltered thrice at 5.74-m. Three Americans topped the podium: Christopher Nilson took gold with a leap of 5.82-m, followed by KC Lightfoot at 5.74-m and Daniel at 5.66-m. This is Obiena's first competition since his successful defense of his crown in the Asian Championships last week.
He will next compete in the Oslo Bislett Games on June 12.
