EJ Obiena finishes second in Wesel pole vault meet in Germany

September 2 ------ Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena placed second in the Domspringen Wesel Internationales Stabhochsprungmeeting in Wesel, Germany.

Obiena cleared 5.75 meters to finish second behind France’s Robin Emig, who topped the competition with a 5.80-meter clearance. It took Obiena two attempts to clear 5.75 meters after skipping the 5.60-, 5.65-, and 5.70-meter bars. The Asian record holder then attempted to clear 5.85 meters but failed to do so.

American Cole Walsh finished third with a 5.70-meter clearance on countback, as France’s Ethan Cormont also cleared the same height in three attempts. “Rough, rough day and tiredness,” Obiena wrote in the caption of his post. “Eventually caught up after 6 competitions this last 14 days. Took too many mistakes at the earlier bars and paid the price.”

Obiena was referring to the six competitions he had participated in since August 17. During that span, Obiena won two meets, including the Golden Sand in Poland and, most recently, the ISTAF Berlin. He also secured a spot in the World Championships on August 27 after clearing 5.90 meters and finishing fifth in Zurich.
