Domestic workers in 13 regions get pay hike

MANILA, Philippines, February 7 ------ Domestic workers in 13 regions have received an increase in their salary, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). At the Bagong Pilipinas public briefing yesterday, DOLE Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez said the regional wage boards granted the pay increase without formal petitions. Benavidez said domestic helpers in Calabarzon were the latest to get a salary increase. He said only domestic workers in Central Luzon, Central Visayas and Davao have yet to get pay hikes.

Meanwhile, Benavidez said more workers in hotels, restaurants and similar establishments would benefit from the revised implementing rules and regulations of the Service Charge Law. He said those hired by contractors are also entitled to receive the service charges collected by covered establishments. The service charge will be distributed fully and equally based on actual hours or days of work or service rendered by covered employees.

Benavidez said employees of hotels and similar establishments would continue to receive the benefits provided them under the company policy and collective bargaining agreement.
