MANILA, August 21 ------ After being hospitalized last week, Darren Espanto is back to work but still taking it easy. The ‘It’s Showtime’ host was hospitalized due to appendicitis. Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Darren recalled the first time he felt the excruciating pain on his lower right abdomen, on his flight back to Manila after "ASAP" in California. “So a few hours bago mag-land sa Manila, naramdaman ko pagka-gising ko sa plane na masakit na 'yung parang lower right part ng stomach ko,” he said. “Akala ko gutom lang, gas or parang ulcer or food poisoning. Pero hindi eh, parang bearable pa po 'yung pain.”
Right after landing and getting his luggage, the pain wasn’t bearable any longer. “Tapos nung nag-land na, pagpasok sa car. Hindi na talaga. I was really in pain... Hindi po ako 'yung usually nagpapadala agad sa ospital or nagsasabi pag may masakit. Pero 'yun talaga, iba na po.” He was then rushed to the nearest hospital. And his doctors ruled he had appendicitis. “Ang bilis ng mga pangyayari. Pagka CT-scan sa akin, x-ray and everything, ooperahan na ako agad. Wala na 'kong choice. First time kong magkaroon ng ganung operation, but I felt nothing.” As for the cause, “Indigestion po. Wala po siyang masabing cause kung where it came from specifically. But it’s indigestion, 'yung kakain ka tapos hihiga ka, or sasayaw, oily food, 'yung movement mo sa stomach mo ay irregular na,” said Darren.
Known to be a high-octane performer onstage, his doctors advised him to slow things down while he’s still recovering. “Bawal sumayaw for one month, mag-gym ng one month, mga strenuous activities. I’m just glad na it happened after 'ASAP,' after my concert,” Darren said. Good thing, the annual ‘Magpasikat’ showdown is still scheduled in October and that would give him ample time to recover. But as early as now, Darren is excited to perform for his very first ‘Magpasikat’ with Vhong Navarro, Amy Perez and Ion Perez. “I never would have imagined na magiging part ako ng ‘Magpasikat’ team, kasi dati nag-guest lang ako sa ibang teams before, naging hurado and now I'm actually part of one of the teams,” he said. “Kinakabahan but very excited as well. Kasi kahit ano pwedeng mangyari."
