September 16 ------ CARLO Biado leads the 6-player Filipino contingent at the WPA Men’s 10-ball World Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Biado will be defending his title in the tournament that runs from Sept. 20 to 28.
The 41-year-old defeated Japanese Naoyuki Oi in the final, 3-1 (sets), to claim the championship last year. The other Filipino players are Anthony Raga, Jeffrey De Luna, Kyle Amoroto, Lee Van Corteza, and Sean Malayan. Oi as well as last year’s third placer in Estonian Denis Grabe and fourth placer American-Russian Fedor Gorst are also competing in the tournament.
Other notable players in the 96-player field are American Shane Van Boening, German Ralf Souquet, Taiwanese Ko Ping-chung, and German Joshua Filler. The tournament boasts a prize fund of $250,000 including $70,000 or P4 million. The runner-up gets $40,000 (P2.2 million) while the semifinalists take $17,500 (P1 million) each.
The tournament follows a double-elimination bracket in the stage 1 qualifiers until the final 32 players remain for the knockout phase. A player advances in the knockout round if he goes 2-0 in the qualifiers, while the loser either in his first or second match will have to work his way in the loser’s bracket.
