Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat included in IndieWire’s 100 Best Movie Sequels Ever Made

August 15 ------ Star Cinema’s Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat was named by IndieWire as one of the 100 Best Movie Sequels Ever Made. Sitting at the 75th spot on the list, it is one of the two Philippine films that made the list–– the other being Kidlat Tahimik’s Who Invented the Yoyo? Who Invented the Moon Buggy? which sits at the 87th spot.

IndieWire is a publication that was established in 1996 and has been covering the business and art of entertainment, covering everything from film to television to streaming platforms. Lé Baltar, a contributor to IndieWire, shared how the franchise film is more than just comedy, as it also became a parody of the time when Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat made its premiere in the country.

“The film’s pleasures also rest on its political inflection, setting up in the process a parody of the despotic Gloria Macapagal Arroyo regime under which the blockbuster film was made — and therefore a critique of the self-mythologizing power of assuming the image of a charismatic maternal figure to provoke a kind of electoral herd mentality in a country where the family unit is deemed sacred,” Lé Baltar expressed. “What Deramas has fashioned here is prime, though not readily flawless, entertainment that freely bends the parameters of studio moviemaking to his will,” Lé Baltar added.

Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat is the sequel of Ang Tanging Ina, which tells a different story from the first film. Ina Montencillo (portrayed by Ai-Ai delas Alas) has taken on the biggest challenge to not only be a mother to 12 children but to the rest of the nation as she becomes the President of the Philippines.

Joining in the sequel are Eugene Domingo, Carlo Aquino, Alwyn Uytingco, Shaina Magdayao, Serena Dalrymple, Jiro Manio, and Cherry Pie Picache, among others. The Star Cinema film was the official entry to the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival and was considered as a box office success.
