MANILA, Philippines, July 23 ------ Filipino tennis hotshot Alex Eala dropped to 69th in the latest Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released. The fall from her career-best 56th place is expected since Eala has not competed in any tournament for three weeks now. That enabled players behind Eala to pile up the points, climb the rankings, and overtake her.

Eala last saw action at the Wimbledon, making her major debut on the grass court and being the first Filipina to have competed at the aforementioned Grand Slam. The 20-year-old suffered early elimination in Wimbledon's singles and doubles tiff which succeeded her runner-up finish at the Eastbourne Open late June. There, Eala became the first Filipino player to reach the final of a WTA tournament which catapulted her from 74th to 56th in the rankings.

Eala recently held a meet-and-greet event at The Globe Tower last Friday in Bonifacio Global City, where she also faced the press in a wide-ranging interview. The lefty netter swings back to action in Canada where she will compete at the National Bank Open set from July 26 to August 7.

That will serve as part of her preparation for the US Open slated from August 24 to September 7 in New York, where she will gun for her first Grand Slam win. "There is still a lot for me to achieve," said Eala. "There are a lot of big tournaments lined up, not just in the US Open. I hope to play well there and of course try to get that first Grand Slam win. After that, I'll be circling back to Asia." she added.
