March 2 ------ President Volodymyr Zelensky has advocated for regime change in Iran during his Sunday evening address amid the US’s ongoing military operations against the Middle Eastern nation.
On Saturday, the US and Israel launched “Operation Epic Fury,” including strikes against targets across Iran that US President Donald Trump said were part of a campaign to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Iranian state media confirmed on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led the country since 1989, was killed in the strikes.
In an X update, Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukrainian authorities are “closely monitoring” the developments, called for regime change in Tehran, and criticized the regime for its violent crackdowns during recent protests. “We are now closely monitoring every change in the situation surrounding Iran. Ukraine’s intelligence service, the Foreign Ministry – all are involved. We are coordinating our actions with partners,” Zelensky wrote. “It is crucial that this opportunity for change for Iran is properly seized.”
Reiterating his earlier comments, Zelensky also criticized Tehran for supplying weapons to Russia that were used against Ukraine. “This regime, which has killed tens of thousands of its own citizens in recent months alone, which has always fueled and organized wars in the region, which has provided Russia with ‘Shahed’ drones and the technology to produce them – this regime has brought this attitude upon itself,” Zelensky added.
On Saturday, Zelensky said Tehran “chose to become [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s accomplice” and enabled Moscow’s use of over 57,000 Shahed-type attack drones against Ukrainian civilians, cities and energy infrastructure. Zelensky’s latest statements also mirrored those made by Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, who said on Saturday that Ukraine “always stands with the Iranian people.” “The Iranian regime has for decades terrorized the region, supported and financed militant groups that spread instability abroad, and oppressed its own people,” Sybiha said, adding that Tehran was repeatedly offered diplomatic avenues and opportunities to seek solutions but failed to use them.
