Zelensky: US Overlooks Russia Helping Iran Target Bases

April 10 ------ The United States has ignored compelling evidence that Russia has been assisting Iran in targeting American bases in the Middle East because it “trusts” Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

In an interview with Alastair Campbell on The Rest is Politics podcast, Zelensky said he had repeatedly tried to alert the White House to Moscow and Tehran’s close military collaboration. He said Russian military satellites had mapped critical energy infrastructure in Gulf states and Israel, as well as US army bases across the region.

According to Zelensky, the Kremlin shared this intelligence with Iran to facilitate its attacks. “I said this publicly. Did we hear a reaction from the US to Russia that they have to stop it?” Zelensky asked rhetorically. “The problem is they trust Putin. And it’s a pity.”

Zelensky also criticized US President Donald Trump’s team for failing to fully understand Russia’s intentions. He pointed to Trump negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who he said had “spent too much time” with Putin and senior Russian officials. The pair traveled to Moscow five times last year but have yet to visit Kyiv. The Ukrainian president added he has a greater understanding of the Russian leader’s psychology and actual war aims than the White House.

Notably, speaking in an interview with Italian outlet Rai, Zelensky said he is among the few leaders who openly tell Trump when he is wrong. “I’m one of the few who tells Trump what I think,” he told the outlet. He added that this direct approach underpins what he described as a strong working relationship with the US leader. “Who has a better relationship with Trump than me? I think we have good relations because I’m one of the few people who tells him,” Zelensky said. “There aren’t many people who can tell the president of the United States that he’s not always right,” he added.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine needs continued US backing not only in military terms but also politically, arguing that Washington also benefits from Kyiv’s wartime experience. “We need support from the United States, not just militarily. They also need us and our experience gained during these years of war,” he said.
