December 19 ------ In the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Call Me Mother,” Vice Ganda and Nadine Lustre reunite in a comedy-drama that explores a mother or a mother figure’s unconditional love.
During a media huddle, the two shared how the film redefines motherhood and expressed appreciation for mothers who embrace both its pains and joys. “This movie has explained to me that motherhood is beyond gender. It’s beyond bearing a child and giving birth to a child. Mas malawak, mas malalim pa ang ibig sabihin ng pagiging nanay pala,” Vice told The STAR.
The popular actor-comedian praised mothers around the world for their strength, their willingness to take on the responsibility of being one, and the unwavering love with which they fulfill the obligations of motherhood. “No woman is ever truly ready for motherhood,” declared Nadine. “I have a lot of friends who said they want to be mothers. ‘Pag nandiyan na, ‘Ah, ganito pala yun.’ And that’s OK. That’s not a problem.” According to Nadine, these kinds of situations serve as lessons in personal growth and learning.
Helmed by award-winning filmmaker Jun Robles Lana, the movie delves into the complexities of unwavering love, commitment, and sacrifice throughout motherhood, the synopsis reads. “Call Me Mother” is a story about two mothers: Twinkle (Vice) and Mara (Nadine). Twinkle is a former queen maker-turned-adoptive, loving queer mother to Angelo (Lucas Andalio), proving that motherhood isn’t about biology but about choosing love and devotion.
On the other hand, Mara, Angelo’s biological mom, is a former teen pageant prodigy-turned-high-fashion model who lives with deep regret for having made the life-changing decision to abandon Angelo in order to follow her dreams. Twinkle reaches out to Mara to finalize the adoption that will allow him to bring Angelo to his new job abroad. However, Mara will only agree to sign the adoption papers if Twinkle helps her win the biggest beauty pageant in the country. From a reluctant parent to a fully embracing motherhood, can Twinkle live up to his end of the bargain with Mara despite her growing closeness to Angelo? This is the sentiment conveyed in the film.
