Ukraine supporters protest against Russian minister's Brazil visit

April 18 ------ The arrival of Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Brazil today has sparked protests by supporters of Ukraine.

Mr Lavrov spoke with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira in Brasilia earlier, and is set to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva later today.

Over the weekend, Mr Lula called for a group of countries not involved in the war to broker a peace deal, in a move that unnerved Washington.

"The United States needs to stop encouraging war and start talking about peace," Mr Lula said in remarks to journalists broadcast by state TV.
