Ukraine should be invited to prepare for NATO membership 'as soon as possible'

May 3 ------ Boris Johnson has told MPs in Westminster that Ukraine should be invited to make preparations to join NATO "as soon as possible".

The former prime minister also said it was "ludicrous to say that Ukraine's NATO membership might be in some way provocative to Russia", given the Kremlin's unprovoked actions.James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, paid tribute to Mr Johnson for "the leadership that he showed at a vital point in time", adding: "NATO's position in regard to Ukraine is unambiguous. The invitation has been put out for Ukraine to join NATO."

Mr Johnson visited Kyiv for talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy before he resigned as PM last year and has been one of the most vocal supporters of Ukraine during the war.
