March 6 ------ Ukraine and Russia began a major prisoner-of-war exchange, with 200 Ukrainian servicemen returning home as part of a planned 500-for-500 swap between the two sides.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the return of the Ukrainian prisoners in a social media post, saying their release brought relief to hundreds of families. “Today, 200 Ukrainian families received the message they had been waiting for most: their loved ones are returning home,” Zelensky wrote. “This is always good news for all of us, for the entire country – the return of our people to their native land.”

According to the president, those released include defenders captured while fighting in several frontline regions, including the city of Mariupol, as well as Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions. The returning personnel include members of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, the State Special Transport Service, border guards, and National Guard troops.

This latest swap follows the first prisoner exchange of 2026, which took place on Feb. 5. On that day, Ukraine and Russia carried out a swap that resulted in the return of 157 Ukrainians from Russian captivity, Zelensky said.

Russian Officials Confirm 500-for-500 Exchange

Russian officials said the swap is part of a broader agreement to exchange 500 prisoners on each side over two days. “There will be an exchange of prisoners of war with Ukraine. 500 for 500,” Russia’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, wrote on Telegram.

Medinsky said the exchange stems from agreements reached during trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in Geneva aimed at finding a path toward ending the war. Russia’s defense ministry has also confirmed that the first phase of the exchange had already taken place, with 200 captured Russian soldiers swapped for 200 Ukrainian prisoners. It added that the released Russian servicemen were transferred to Belarus, a close Russian ally bordering Ukraine. The ministry also said the exchange was mediated with the help of the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

Zelensky thanked international partners who helped facilitate the deal, including Washington, and praised Ukrainian troops on the battlefield whose actions helped secure Russian prisoners that can later be exchanged.

Prisoner Swaps: A Rare Area of Cooperation

Prisoner swaps have been one of the few areas of continued cooperation between Kyiv and Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. The exchanges are also among the rare tangible outcomes of diplomatic efforts led by Washington to broker an end to the conflict. However, negotiations have struggled to gain momentum amid a lack of progress and the recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
