Team Philippines rebounds with 8 gold medals in SEA Games Day 6

PATTAYA, Thailand, December 16 ------ The Philippines produced eight gold medals, the most by-far for a day to continue its nip and tuck race with Malaysia in the middle of the overall standings of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.
The PH contingent switched places with Malaysia throughout Day 6 of competition before ending up at sixth place with 25 golds, 38 silvers, and 80 bronzes. Malaysia is in fifth with 26-28-80. Four gold medals came from the practical shooting team with world champion Rolly Tecson (standard), Edcel Gino (men’s production optics), Erin Micor (women’s open), and Genesis Pible (women’s production optics), putting a spotlight to the sport that was introduced in the SEA Games for the first time.
Elreen Ando finally helped the weightlifting team break through by winning the gold in the women’s 63kg category. Jones Inso completed the sweep of the taijiquan + taijijian event with a gold in the wushu taolu event. Two rising stars of Philippine athletics in Naomi Cesar and Hussein Lorana swept the 800m events at the Supalachasai National Stadium in the penultimate day of the sport.
Kayla Sanchez closed her SEA Games stint with a silver in the 4x100m medley relay with Heather White, Miranda Cristina Renner, and Xiandi Chua. Robyn Brown also copped the silver in the women’s 400m hurdles in athletics. The practical shooting team had a silver in Evelyn Woods (women’s production optics), and three bronzes from Stefanie Lee (women’s standard), Aeron John Lanuza (men’s production optics), and Gerard Loy (men’s open). Paris Olympian Lauren Hoffman got a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles, as was Bernadette Bejoy in the women’s 800m, and Junel Gobotia in the 3000m steeplechase. Kristina Knott, Lianne Pama, Jessica Laurence, and Zion Nelson claimed the bronze in the women’s 4x100m relay.
