LUCENA CITY, October 30 ------ Taal Volcano in Batangas province recorded 61 seismic activities within 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. In its morning bulletin, Phivolcs said 41 volcanic earthquakes were recorded. The quakes were accompanied by 20 volcanic tremors that lasted two to 30 minutes.

The 61 seismic events in a single day were the highest number recorded this month. Taal Volcano has been rattled by almost daily earthquakes this month, with no seismic activity noted on October 1, 5, 20, and 23, according to data from Phivolcs. From Oct. 1 to 30, the agency recorded 336 volcanic earthquakes and 56 tremor episodes, a significant rise from September’s 189 quakes and 129 tremors.

Phivolcs explained that volcanic earthquakes are triggered by magmatic or magma-related processes beneath or near an active volcano, unlike tectonic quakes caused by fault movements.
