‘Squid Game’ wins at 31st Gotham Awards

December 1 ------ Netflix’s global hit Korean series “Squid Game” won at the 31st Annual Gotham Awards held on Nov. 29 in New York City. “Squid Game” bagged the award for Breakthrough Series-Long Format (over 40 minutes) against “The Good Lord Bird,” “It’s A Sin,” “Small Axe,” “The Underground Railroad” and “The White Lotus.” Korean actor Lee Jung-jae, star of “Squid Game,” was nominated for Outstanding Performance in a New Series, which was won by Ethan Hawke of “The Good Lord Bird” and Thuso Mbedu of “The Underground Railroad.”

The Gotham Awards, presented by the Gotham Film & Media Institute in New York City, recognized independent films and series and their writers, directors, producers, and actors, according to The Gotham. The nominees were chosen by committees composed of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. A separate group of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making films will choose the winners. “Squid Game” tells the story of 456 players who join deadly children’s games for a prize of 45.6 billion won ($38.8 million). Netflix previously said the Korean series “has become our biggest TV show ever. A mind-boggling 142m member households globally have chosen to watch the title in its first four weeks.”
