Senate OKs bill extending validity of 2021 budget until end of 2022


December 14 ------ The Senate, by a 22-0-0 vote, approved on Monday, Dec. 13 House Bill 10373 that seeks to extend the validity of the 2021 national budget until December 31, 2022. The bill was the first of 15 bills up for approval on third and final reading on the calendar of the Senate in its plenary session presided by Senate President Vicente C. Sotto III. There were also 26 bills for sponsorship, three for amendments and eight for interpellation.


Earlier, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said the Upper House aims pass as many bulls as it could, including a possible ratification of a bicameral conference committee report on the proposed 2022 P5 trillion national budget this week, before it goes into a Christmas break. Senators said the approval into law of the 2021 budget bill would to allow government departments and agencies to fully utilize the allocated budget for 2021 to implement government programs and projects and to ensure that the intended beneficiaries of these basic services are reached.


They said the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the implementation ion many programs, projects and activities under the 2021 budget. The current 2021 budget is due to expire on December 31, 2021.
