Second alarm raised over Marikina River twice this week

Metro Manila, August 3 ------ The Marikina River's water level breached 16 meters early Thursday morning, prompting the local disaster management office to raise the second alarm for a second time this week.

According to the Marikina Public Information Office, the water level passed 16 meters at 4 a.m. Under this alert, nearby residents were asked to evacuate the river's vicinity. The alert was lowered to first alarm an hour later as the water level decreased to 15.9 meters at 5 a.m. Earlier this week, the office also raised second alarm over the river due to its rising water levels caused by continuous rains.

The Marikina Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office raised the first alarm at 11:26 p.m on Wednesday, alerting its residents to be prepared for possible evacuation. Once the water level goes beyond 18 meters, third alarm will be raised meaning forced evacuation. Both Typhoon Falcon and Super Typhoon Egay are already outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but several areas have declared a state of calamity due to continuous rains and flooding caused by the enhanced southern monsoon.
