July 25 ------ Filipino boy group SB19 expressed how hands-on they were in all aspects for Pagtatag! The Documentary. In their exclusive interview with American magazine Variety prior to the release of their documentary on streaming platform Netflix, the group shared some thoughts and hopes for what’s next in the P-Pop scene. The quintet–– Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin–– reflected on the past seven years since they’ve made their debut as a group.
In the documentary, SB19 made sure to highlight the struggles and challenges they’ve had as they wanted to show the reality of it all: apart from being P-Pop idols, they are still human just like their fans. “We believe it’s important to be real and honest about the challenges we face day to day… Opening up about mental health, industry pressure, and personal troubles helps break the stigma and shows that even though we’re artists and performers, we’re still human,” Stell shared with Variety. “Hearing how our music helped people with grief and dark times, or even gave them a sense of purpose and strength – it is overwhelming in the best way. We’re human too, so sometimes it feels like they saved us in a similar way,” he added.
The group expressed how important this documentary is not only for them but for the rest of the P-Pop community–– that they could have the opportunity to share their story as well to the whole world one day. “Our goal goes beyond SB19. We want to help P-pop gain global recognition and support our culture, arts, and economy. It is an ambitious dream but everything is connected,” Josh expressed.
When asked by the American magazine what their documentary could bring to the table, especially for first time viewers of the boy group, Josh hoped that it could allow them to dream and believe in themselves–– just like what the five of them did. “I really hope they see no dream is too big, you just have to keep working and trying. I hope they understand that our story is not just about music, it’s about believing in yourself no matter what,” Josh shared.
SB19’s Pagtatag! The Documentary is now available on streaming platform Netflix. Fans have been raving about the documentary on social media and sharing their own learnings from it.
