San Lazaro Hospital logs 69 leptospirosis cases

MANILA, Philippines, August 8 ------ Sixty-nine leptospirosis patients have been admitted at the San Lazaro Hospital in Manila. The figure is tripled compared to the 20 leptospirosis cases recorded in July, the hospital management said.
Forty-five of the cases are in severe condition while 24 are moderate cases. Of the number, 59 are males and the rest are females. Thirty-five of the cases had multiple exposures to floodwaters.
Leptospirosis is acquired through direct contact with urine of infected animals such as rats and pigs. Its symptoms include fever, headache, chills, body pain and eye redness.
