September 3 ------ JEFREY Roda leads the five-man Philippine player pool that is set to compete at the Zen & Yuan 8 Open slated from Sept. 2 to 5 in Shanghai, China. Offering a prize fund of $60,000 including $20,000 (P1.1 million), the tournament is going to be held at Yuan 8 Billiards Club.
Roda last saw action at the US Open last month where he exited the tournament in the round of 16, losing to eventual champ Aloysius Yapp of Singapore, 2-10. Yapp is also competing in this Shanghai tournament. Roda bagged $8,000 or P459,000 for reaching the last 16, the second-furthest round reached by a Filipino in the US Open. Chua, who won’t be competing in this Shanghai tiff, reached the furthest as he made it to the semifinals where he lost to Yapp, 7-11.
The “BadKoi” pocketed $25,000 or P1.4 million for reaching the final four. The other Filipinos competing in Shanghai are Marvin Asis, Bernie Regalario, Harry Vergara and Michael Feliciano. Asis, Regalario nd Vergara all made the last 64 in the US Open while Feliciano did not participate. Reigning two-time world 9-ball champ Carlo Biado isn’t part of the Philippine pool in Shanghai but is expected to compete at the Hanoi Open in Vietnam alongside defending champ Chua, and at the Reyes Cup in Manila next month.
