Metro Manila, November 20 ------ The reported deaths due to the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Sarangani, Davao Occidental rose to eight, disaster response officials said. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRMMC) said four deaths were logged in Sarangani, three in South Cotabato, and one in Davao Occidental.
As of 3 p.m. on Sunday, the agency said it was still verifying the casualties and reports that 13 persons were injured due to the quake. At least 180 families, or over 1,500 individuals, were affected by the quake that shook the waters south of Sarangani bay on Friday afternoon.
It also damaged at least 125 houses and buildings in Davao City, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, South Cotabato, and Sarangani. The NDRRMC further reported three out of 12 affected roads in Soccsksargen remain impassable. Meanwhile, power have been restored and all affected bridges have been cleared of obstructions.
The Soccsksargen has been placed under red alert, which means all disaster officials in the region must report to their headquarters 24/7.
